Abstract
Lean manufacturing has become a critical strategy for improving operational efficiency, minimising waste, and enhancing competitiveness within the manufacturing sector. Thisstudy examines the challenges and benefits of implementing selected lean manufacturing techniques at Nampak Metal Cluster, a prominent player in South Africa's packaging industry. Employing a qualitative research design, the study gathers data through semi-structured interviews with managerial personnel to gain comprehensive insights into the adoption and optimisation of lean practices. The findings highlight key challenges, including organisational resistance to change, limited financial and technological resources, and insufficient training on lean principles. Nonetheless, the study identifies substantial benefits, such as improved production efficiency, reduced operational costs through waste minimisation, and enhanced quality control. These outcomes illustrate the transformative potential of lean manufacturing in driving operational excellence and competitiveness. However, to enhance the effectiveness of lean implementation, the study recommends targeted training initiatives, robust leadership support to cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, and strategic investment in technological and infrastructural capabilities. These measures are essential for mitigating implementation barriers and sustaining lean practices over time. This research contributes to the theoretical discourse on lean manufacturing by contextualising its application within the South African manufacturing environment. In practice, it offers evidence-based recommendations for Nampak and similar enterprises seeking to improve productivity through lean strategies. Future studies are encouraged to examine the long-term impacts of lean practices, conduct cross-sectoral analyses, and explore the integration of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), to further enhance lean implementation.
