Abstract
The interrelationship between physical activity, happiness and
burnout in female persons in managerial positions.
Stress is a general problem among people in managerial positions. Burnout is a
response to chronic emotional stress. Many research exists about the effect of
participation in physical activity on the stress-health-relationship, however, little is
known about the burnout-health-relationship, and what influences, if any, physical
activity has on above mentioned relationship. Happiness has been found to have
positive influences on health, and it is believed that participation in physical activity
can increase levels of happiness.
The purpose of this study was firstly to investigate the prevalence of burnout and
happiness in female managers. Secondly, the association between burnout and
happiness, as well as burnout and participation in physical activity was investigated.
Lastly the effect of participation in physical activity on the relationship between
burnout and happiness were determined.
The subjects of the study were 321 female executives drawn from the SANGALAdata
from companies all over South Africa. Participation in physical activity was
determined with Sharkey's (1984) Physical Activity Index. The amount of burnout
was determined using the Pines Burnout-scale (1981) and happiness was determined
with the A:ffectometer 2 (AFM).
In the one-way analysis of variance that was done, burnout showed no statistically
significant (p>0.05) relationship with participation in physical activity. Happiness
however showed statistically significant (p≤0.05) relations with burnout. The lower
the amount of burnout, the happier the person.
The results of the two-way analysis shows that the statistically significant (p :::;0.05)
relationship between burnout and happiness exists independent of participation in
physical activity.
