dc.description.abstractAccording to research, adequate activity has a positive influence on the well-being of a person. Research indicates that activity has a positive influence on the total self-concept as well as the physical self-concept of children. It is also found that motor problems (DCD) have a negative effect on the self­concept of children. Literature also shows that boys have a higher total self-concept and physical self­concept compared to girls, although it is indicated that they have more motor problems than girls. The pwpose of this study was to examine the relationship between DCD and self-concept of children in the age group 10-12 years in the Northwest province (N = 526). A second puipose was to examine the differences between boys and girls in the age group 10-12 years in the Northwest province classified as DCD (N = 326). A group of children were randomly selected from all the districts in the Northwest province proportionally representing the different racial groups [White (n = 87), Black (n = 351), Coloured (n = 47), Indian (n = 41)]. In this group, 260 boys and 266 girls completed the Movement ABC (MABC) (Henderson & Sugden, 1992) and the Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHSCS) (Piers, 1984). For the analysis of the data, the Statistica for Windows computer package was used. The DCD group showed statistically significant lower total self-concepts as well as physical self-concepts than the group of children without DCD (p :S 0.05). A multiple regression analysis showed that manual dexterity problems played the biggest role in the development of a low self-concept, while only ball skills showed a small effect on the children's physical self-concept. Analysis of differences in self­concept of boys and girls with DCD showed that girls with DCD had lower self-concepts although not significantly. It can be concluded that girls are more aware of their DCD status and that it has a higher, although not significant, influence on their self-concept than among boys. Overall, the conclusion can be made that DCD has an effect on a 10-12 year old child's total self-concept, and to a lesser degree on his physical self-concept.
