Abstract

The purpose of tr1is study was to determine the problems of the out-of-school unemployed youth and their needs, with the ultimate aim of providing guidelines for setting up a youth non-formal education programme. Little has been documented about the youth non-formal education programmes in South Africa, especially the North West Province. A sample of 500 out-of-school and unemployed youth between the ages of 15-25 years were used. Results from 416 respondents were analysed. The results revealed that youth unemployment is a problem which requires an immediate attention, because of its high socio -economic costs. On the basis of the challenges identified from the literature and the empirical study, guidelines were drawn for setting up a youth non-formal programme.
