dc.description.abstractIn the development of a technology policy, certain ma i n components have to be identified to formulate and implement the technology policy. These main components can be identified as: (i) Technology (ii) Resources (iii) Strategy (iv) Policy (v) Macro environment In the steel industry it is essential for all process development and planning work to be carried out according to a laid down procedure. This procedure will be incorporated in the business strategy and the technology policy will be formulated with the business and technology strategy as the source of reference. In the formulation of the technology policy the firm will be able to direct it's research and development in the desired way so as to get the highest return on the investment in process, machineary and people. From the study it is concluded that the model for a technology policy can be implemented in the firm and this implementation can be carried out via the business strategy. Due to the lack of a technology policy, it can be stated that there is a lack of direction in the purchasing of technology and the implementation and maintenance of existing technologies. The respondents to the questionnaire stated that a technology policy is essential if the firm is to survive the harsh arena of competition that the steel industry is entering. To conclude: In the light of several factors as mentioned above, the steel manufacturing organisation would have to formulate a technology policy to ensure long term profitability and survival. From this study a technology policy model has been developed which can be used as a tool for strategic planning in the steel industry. The firm can with minor alterations customise the model to suit it's specific requirements.en_US
