This impact case study documents the societal, environmental, educational, and technological impact of research undertaken by the North-West University (NWU) HySA Centre of Competence in collaboration with national and international partners between 2018 and 2024. It demonstrates how sustained research in hydrogen technologies, electrolysis, renewable energy systems, and the water-energy-food nexus has translated into measurable benefits for communities, schools, industry, and government. The case study presents evidence of improved access to renewable energy, enhanced science education, skills development, food security initiatives, technology transfer, and international research collaboration. It also highlights the contribution of North-West University and its partners to advancing South Africa's green hydrogen agenda, strengthening national research infrastructure, and supporting sustainable development through research-informed innovation. The document includes supporting evidence and references that corroborate the reported impacts.
Over the past five years (2018-2024), research collaborations led by consortium of NWU (via HySA CoC), Stellenbosch University's Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES), SANEDI, and the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and Hydrogen South Africa (HySA), have resulted in measurable, verifiable improvements in energy access, education quality, food security, and environmental sustainability in rural South Africa.
