This mini-dissertation conducts a comparative historical analysis of ancient trade economies in the Fertile Crescent and evaluates whether early trade behaviours reflect an innate human propensity for trade and cooperation as a species-level trait. If so, these findings will have significant implications for contemporary economic discourse. Drawing on secondary historical and anthropological sources, it first examines the evolution from prehistoric exchanges (around 130,000 BC) marked by widespread obsidian dispersal and the coevolution of speech for inter-group negotiations. Then, Neolithic transitions (12,000-10,000 BC) that enable surplus production, property ownership, and division of labour in Natufian societies are discussed. Finally, the analysis culminates in looking at urban developments (around 5000-3000 BC), to compare Mesopotamia's hybrid state-private systems with Egypt's centralized pharaonic model, which (among other factors) faced instability and economic pressures influenced by decentralization.Findings suggest a plausible intrinsic propensity for trade, favouring adaptive hybrid arrangements that balance principled individual agency with light-handed governance instead of rigid extremes. Limitations of the study include fragmentary prehistoric data (primarily section 2.1) and interpretive biases in secondary sources (primarily sections 2.2 and 2.3). For policy makers, these insights advocate hybrid policies blending private enterprise with light regulation to foster sustainable resilience.
