Abstract
THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MAINTENANCE STRATEGY
FOR A FERTILIZER MANUFACTURER
Maintenance of production equipment is viewed by some only as
unavoidable overhead. They may not realize that the tradeoff
between maintenance costs and lost production could be a
strategic business opportunity ready for exploitation. The
fact is that maintenance management is becoming an essential
feature of the productivity program of manufacturing and
production organisations.
It is against this background that the development and
implementation of an effective maintenance management
strategy, which would support the strategic goals of the
organisation, is needed.
Maintenance managers' objectives - minimizing maintenance cost
and maximizing production performance - can be achieved only
through the complicated deployment of maintenance workers and
materials, as well as through the optimization of the quality
of service, and the cost of service.
The aim of this study is to develop a framework, from which a
strategy can be developed. This will be done with the
theoretical backing of a literature study.
In short can the strategy be presented as follows:
* Develop a strategic mission for maintenance management.
* Develop a strategic field of reference for the
formulation of a strategy.
* Formulate strategic goals and actionplans.
* Develop the new strategy.
* Research the implementation of the strategy.
* Control and evaluate the strategic success.
This framework for the development of a maintenance strategy,
will then be tested, by putting it to practise with the
development of a strategy for a fertilizer manufacturer.
Although the strategy will be developed with a specific
fertilizer manufacturer in mind, it will be the intension of
the author, to develop the framework in such a conceptual way,
that it can be used in any manufacturing company.
