Abstract
The problem statement, motivation and objectives for this study are discussed in
chapter 1. From this information, it would appear that depression has become a
relevant problem which seems to be on the increase among children. The depressive
parent and negative methods of upbringing have a disruptive effect on the total
development of the child. The young child cannot be separated from the context of
his upbringing and the inadequate application of methods of upbringing results in an
affective state of emergency. The aim of this study was to determine whether family
therapy has the potential to deal with a depressive child.
Chapter 2 deals mainly with depression in children, the controversial aspects about
the existence of depression in children, the manifestation of depression in children
and the general delineation and definition of depression.
In chapter 3, attention is paid to the role of parents as a cause of depression in
children.
In chapter 4, different family therapeutic paradigms representing the family are
indicated. Secondly, the assumptions of the systems theory are discussed and
. ._finally, certain family models based on that theory are discussed.
Chapter 5 focuses mainly on some methodological remarks about this study. The
nature of qualitative ideographic research and the various investigative media are
discussed.
An investigation of a qualitative evaluation of family therapy as an ortho-pedagogical
aid to a depressive pupil is introduced in chapter 6. It has been found that families
with depressive children have experienced problems with regard to positive family
functioning and especially to communication, the resolution of conflict and stress, the
handling of behavioural problems and proximity in family relationships.
In chapter 7, the results are discussed, conclusions are drawn and recommendations
are proposed.
