Abstract

This investigation focuses on the following problems: * What is the nature of organisational stress, and its manifestation in the primary school in particular? * What are the factors causing organizational stress with the teacher? * How can the teacher handle organizational stress? The nature, extent and causes of stress as well as organizational stress occurring in South Africa and in other countries are being investigated by means of a literature study. Various viewpoints, levels and stages of stress, as well as certain stress models and the managerial stress cycle are discussed. The managerial stress cycle is based on the various models and is used to define organizational stress. Eight important organizational stressors are identified and the effects of stress on the individual within the organization are discussed. The effects of stress and organizational stress on education as such and also the handling of such stress are discussed. A structured questionnaire is used in an empirical investigation of the presence and intensity of the eight organizational stressors identified during the literature study. The final stage is a summary of the literature study and the empirical investigation. Certain findings are put forward and specific recommendations are made to be implemented by the profession and to be used as basis for further research.
