Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of aldicarb on some
metabolic processes in the developing leaves of Nicotiana tabacwn L. cv.
TL 33. Quantitative determinations were made over a period of sixty days
of the changes in the concentrations of the total soluble proteins, free
amino acids, total free reducing sugars and starch. Changes in malate
dehydrogenase activity, percentage dry weight, membrane permeability (determined as percentage apparent fee space - %AFS) and cell structure (determined electron microscopically) were also examined in order to compare
physiological and cytological events. The respiration rate was used as a
criterium to determine the stage of development. The results obtained
from aldicarb treated plants were compared with those obtained from a control group.
The changes in the respiration rate of developing tobacco leaves showed
a typical climacteric pattern. The climacteric rise coincided with an
increase in the membrane permeability of both groups but ripening occured
two weeks earlier in the treated plants. ...
