Abstract

SIIIIARY, MANAGEMENT COMPETENCIES OF THE TEACHER IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOL The ability of the teacher to make effective use of management principles should figure largely in the modern school set-up. The central role played by the teacher in the classroom regarding management and teaching stresses the importance of fonnal training in order to instruct the teacher in manage-ment principles. The area in which the teacher must apply these management principles, is thenclassroom. Therefore, classroom management as sub-discipline of Educational Management, consists of those specific regulative tasks or actions perfonned by the teacher to facilitate the achievement of effective education in the classroom. In this study the four major managerial tasks, that consists of planning, organizing, leading and controlling have been described. The managerial task of planning, which includes the sub-tasks of goal defining, policy making, decision making and problem solving consists of the purposeful contemplation by the teacher regarding the future goals of the classroom resources and the activities involved in compiling the most suitable plan for the achievement of effective education. The managerial task of organizing consists of the creation of a structure, defining the tasks, authority and the position of each member of the class-room. Organizing also consists of the sub-tasks of delegating within the structure, and co-ordinating all aspects of the organization to function as an integrated whole towards effective education. The third major managerial task is the leading task which consists of the sub-tasks of the creation of relationships, leadership, motivation and com-munication. In order to guide the pupils towards the achievement of effective education the teacher must have the ability to apply this managerial task effectively. Controlling as the last major managerial task involves the actions taken by the teacher to establish a standard of nonns to which the pupils must comply. This major managerial task consists therefore of the sub-tasks of controlling measures, the observation and evaluation of work done by the pupils and taking corrective actions i n order to readjust, if the outcome does not comply with the achievement of effective education. In the classroom the teacher must be able to apply these four major managerial tasks with the various sub-tasks in order to facilitate an environment in which effective education can take place. The teacher in the primary school should therefore receive comprehensive training in classroom management, consisting of scientifically structured knowledge. The training in classroom manage-ment will enable the teacher to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the classroom. In order to assist the teacher this study indicates how the teacher can make the managerial tasks applicable in the classroom . Planning can be done through the effective planning for the activities at the beginning of the year. The effecient use of time is important as well as the establishing of group aims, classroom policy, rules and procedures. These principles guide the teacher as far as his management task is concerned. Organizing as a managerial task consists of the grouping of the pupils and the effecient use of the facilities available such as furniture and room space. The central role played by the teacher is the motivation of the pupils and to make their need your (teacher) concern. In fullfillment of the leading task the teacher must also be visibi-e to the pupils and must convey a clear message through communication and enthusiasm. The teacher must also pay careful attention through the controlling task at disciplinary measures, corrective actions, guidance and remedian work. The managerial tasks consisting of planning organizing, leading and controlling do have an influence on the classroom climate. The environment in which the teacher teaches and instructs plays a vit al role. The teacher should ensure that the pupils feel secure in their environment. The managerial tasks of planning, organizing leading and controlling are important functions in the modern classroom where the teacher is being held exclusively responsible for the effectiveness of the education which takes place in the classroom
