This study is a first in South African Creative Writing. In the research the point of departure is to be found in the structural elements which the American linguist, William Labov, distinguished as underlying a well-structured oral narrative. These elements are in the course of the study developed into a paradigm which can be used in the writing of a children's story. Against the background of the sociolinguistics of Labov's analysis, the elements are further placed within the theoretical framework of speech act theory and Mary Louise Pratt's narratological analysis. On the basis of the above study narratives are then classified. The elements are then also applied to children's literature. Published and unpublished children's stories are analysed with reference to these elements and interviews done with authors of children's stories. On the basis of the analyses the elements are developed into a paradigm in the Creative Writing sense of the term. Finally, the paradigm is explained within the framework of Creative Writing and then used to create a children's story (which has been accepted for broadcasting) for the purposes of the study.en_US
