Abstract
This script represents a study concerning different forms of stock-keeping and
-control. The cost-motive is important, especially where it is used as a
criterium or standard for management decisions. It serves as a basis for profitability and simplifies the choice between centralisation and decentralisation of
stock-keeping and - control.
In Chapter 1 a terminological account is given of a few cost concepts. Attention
is also given to a few kinds of stock. These concepts are reconnoitered as their
interpretation is important.
Chapter 2 deals with problems, functions and systems of stock control. Special
attention is given to the two-bin system and the order-cycle system. Under
purchases, control of quality, and the economic order quantity are critically
reviewed.
Chapter 3 is devoted to the role of budgeting in stock control. The functions,
advantages and disadvantages of budgeting are discussed, as well as the different
budgets which concern the stocks and stock control. A study is also made of certain
stock policies.
Chapter 4 deals with the important decision of centralisation or decentralisation of
stock, but introductory to this, a study is made of the composition of stock and
the problem of integration of information. Thereafter, the following situations are
closely examined and analysed:
1. Internal and external decentralisation.
2. Centralisation and its purchasing advantages.
3. Central control of purchases.
4. Advantages of centralisation, for suppliers.
5. Decentralisation and its purchasing advantages.
6. The cost factor.
In a conclusive summary, a few conclusions are reached.
