Abstract

The English department at the University of the North currently has more than four thousand students who are enrolled for English as a second language in the academic undergraduate programme. These students show a general lack of written and spoken proficiency in the English language, especially grammar. This state of affairs is a direct consequence of the poor standard of' education that these students receive in secondary schools in the Department of Education and Training. Poorly educated students present a problem in the classroom because their grammatical ability is central to their use of language and this affects) their overall performance in all other aspects of language and literature.
