An investigation into student poverty and inequality within Institutions of higher learning in South Africa

Abstract

Students within Institutions of Higher Learning in South Africa continue to encounter challenges of unpaid historical tuition debt, lack of funding, and insufficient affordable student accommodation which have adverse impact on their academic performance. Due to their disadvantaged backgrounds, university students seem to experience difficulties when transitioning from their backgrounds, therefore needing comprehensive support structures that will assist in making adjustments to the high demands of higher education. The study investigates student poverty and inequality within Institutions of Higher Learning with reference to the government's radical intervention. Seemingly, the reality of student poverty and inequality within Institutions of Higher Learning has not yet been achieved despite students demands which fuelled serious student protests. Higher education in South Africa is a social variable that affect communities, individuals and their respective families. Social justice in South Africa's Institutions of Higher Learning has a focal point on institutional policy and efforts in eliminating student poverty and inequalities faced by disadvantaged students. Therefore, attention needs to be drawn to an investigation into student poverty and inequality since it has been an issue and area of concern.
