Abstract
The issue of unemployment in South Africa is a challenge faced by both the public and private sectors. The increasing entry of frustrated individuals into the labour market reflects declining demand for unskilled labour and a rising preference for skilled labour. This trend particularly affects educated youth seeking their first jobs. Despite their qualifications, young South Africans encounter significant barriers to employment across educational levels. This study explores two main themes: first, the promotion of entrepreneurship to address unemployment sustainably, and second, leveraging the agriculture sector and its value chain for job creation. The informal agricultural market, while distinct from the formal sector, plays a crucial role in livelihoods, especially for small-scale farmers. Encouraging entrepreneurship in agriculture could alleviate unemployment by integrating new roles tailored to sector needs. Using a mixed-methods approach including surveys and interviews, this study aims to understand motivational dynamics in informal agribusiness and their potential impact on reducing unemployment. Implementing targeted policies to support informal entrepreneurship could foster economic stability and significant reductions in unemployment rates across South Africa.
