| dc.description.abstract | Coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors and the use of exercise in their management have been published with conflicting results. The contribution of a family history to CAD, as well as the relationship that it demonstrates with other coronary risk factors have not been established yet. The relationship between a positive family history of CAD and selected risk factors were examined in this study, as well as the effect that exercise has on the coronary risk profile of men with a family history of CAD, along with the influence of external factors on the effect brought about by exercise. Men (N=660) between the ages of 30-64 were randomly selected in the Witbank and Vanderbijlpark areas to participate in this study. A number of variables were used which included blood lipids, height, weight, blood pressure, Quetelet index and a physical activity index. Individuals with a family history of CAD showed no statistical significant (p > 0.05) different biochemical risk profile when compared to those without a family history of CAD. Physical activity showed a statistically significant (p ~ 0.05) positive relationship with some coronary risk factors among respondents without a family history of CAD. Among respondents with a family history, physical activity showed no statistically significant (p > 0.05) relationship with the risk factors. After making the necessary adjustments for the influence of body mass and smoking, it was found that physical activity did however show statistically significant relationships with fewer risk factors among men without a family history of CAD. These findings seem to indicate that physical activity has little value for respondents with a positive family history of CAD, if they are overweight and if they smoke. | en_US |
