A true understanding of Calvin’s theology of “assurance and piety” and its application within the Korean Church

Abstract

The concept of assurance and piety plays a crucial role in Calvin's Reformist theology, particularly in emphasising the interdependence of justification and sanctification. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of Calvin's theology of assurance and piety and examines the relevance of such in addressing the challenges faced by the Korean Presbyterian Church (Korean Church, hereafter) to propose practical applications for its implementation.

Calvin's theology places a strong emphasis on the inseparable relationship between justification and sanctification. Furthering Luther's doctrine of justification by faith alone which was instrumental in the Reformation, Calvin highlights the importance of sanctification or piety as an essential response to God's saving grace. In the Korean Church, many believers struggle to strike a balance between faith and practice, leading to a fragmented understanding of salvation.

The Korean Church has inherited Luther's doctrine of justification by faith as the crux of Reformation theology. However, the overemphasis on this doctrine has resulted in an incomplete understanding of the role of sanctification in the believer's life. This imbalance has led to a "cheap grace" mentality, where believers rely solely on the assurance of their salvation without pursuing a life of piety and good works. In contrast, Calvin emphasises the interrelated concepts of assurance and piety, aiming to harmonise justification and sanctification with the pursuit of good deeds. However, Calvin's theology is often misunderstood, leading to an imbalance where the emphasis placed on justification overshadows the importance of piety. Therefore, the Korean Church is facing challenges such as an individualistic approach to faith, moral laxity, secularism, the rise of heresy, and a lack of ethical integrity.

Thus, the study systematically and exegetically analyses Calvin's various works, including his commentaries on the books of Psalms and Romans, Institutes and other relevant writings. The objective of this close analysis is to discern Calvin's understanding and teachings on the harmony of assurance and piety. The study aims to reveal the true essence of Calvin's theology, to pose a correction of the skewed interpretation prevalent in the Korean Church. This entails recognizing the inseparable nature of justification and sanctification, pursuing a life of piety and good works, and actively engaging with the needs of society. Through the application of Calvin's theology, the Korean Church can regain its vitality, credibility, and influence, ultimately fulfilling its mission to be a beacon of light in the world.
