The research comprises the findings with regard to the management of extra-mural activities in the Secondary School. In Chapter 1 the following question is posed: What part do extra-mural activities play in the harmonious development of a pupil at Secondary School? Another question is whether the Head of Department is able to manage in such a manner in his executive post that the policy of the Transvaal Education Department may be realized. The aim of the research is to give a fundamental educational basis of extra-mural activities and to determine what the management task is of the Head of Department with regard to extra-mural activities. The methods applied to obtain the aims of the research are a literature study, a letter in connection with the policy to the Director of Education, Transvaal Education Department and unstructured personal interviews. The field of study is limited to the management task of the Head of Department responsible for extra-mural activities within the structure of the Transvaal Education Department. In Chapters 2 and 3 answers to these questions are put forward. In Chapter 2 an indication is given of how the act structure of the child is developed by extra-mural activities, and also the Head of Department's responsibility to manage these activities according to Christian norms and by exercising a positive influence on the pupils. In Chapter 3 the Head of Department's obligation to manage extra-mural activities in such a way that the pupil's optimal development, and his consequent progress to adulthood, are achieved, is indicated. Chapter 4 indicates how the Head of Department can have a large number of pupils participate in extra-mural activities within the directives set by the Transvaal Education Department. The policy of the principal of the school and the availability of members of the staff determine to what extent the Head of Department can make mass participation succeed. Opportunities for mass participation are plentiful and must be created for the pupils. A positive attitude and purposeful management by the Head of Department ensure successful participation of all the pupils.en_US
