Abstract

The main aim of this study is to firstly investigate the relationship between the work of the Holy Spirit and God's actions in the Gospel according to Luke, and to secondly determine the implications of this relationship for the church today. Luke was a talented author who described Christ's work and person, as well as the establishment of the church, by implementing different writing techniques and a variety of theological themes. The central theological theme with which Luke encompasses all his other motifs, is the fact that everything happens according to God's plan. According to Luke, God remains the one who acts in the history of the world. This theme is supported by the emphasis that Luke places on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. More than any evangelist, Luke accentuates the fact that God works in his creation through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is also the power of renewal through which God steers his creation to its Godly purpose. There is no activity of God the Father where by the Holy Spirit is not invoked. Luke emphasises the work of the Holy Spirit in order to encourage his readers, as well as the church of all times, to know that as church of the Lord Jesus Christ: > the church does not fulfil its task in its own capacity, but is rather the result of the creative work of the Holy Spirit; > the church can make the Kingdom of God visible in this broken world under the guidance of the Holy Spirit; > the Holy Spirit instructs believers in everything that is necessary for their calling through the Word of God.
