    Abstract

    • Summary: The municipal coat of arms approved by the Brakpan Town Council in 1920 was not of sound heraldic design. This, however, only became an issue when the Heraldry Society of Southern Africa called upon the Council to eliminate the heraldic defects in it, so that a badly designed shield should be excluded from a proposed exhibition of municipal coats of arms during the Union festival (1960). The Council nevertheless decided to retain its coat of arms. When a new building for the Transvaal provincial administration was erected, it was decided that only municipal coats of arms of sound heraldic design would be displayed in this building. Thus the Council was forced to reconsider its decision. After consultation with Heraldists the Council had new heraldic bearings designed, which were registered and approved in 1966. The new shield relates to the old coat of arms in so far as it also depicts mining as a factor in the establishment of the town.
