A- AND INTERPERSONAL EFFECTMTY AS CHARACTERISTICS OF SELF ACTUALIZATION IN A GROUP OF NURSING LECTURERS IN GAUTENG A nursing lecturer perfonns various roles (each of which entails specific functions) in her career. In order to carry out her instructional, research and leadership roles she should possess the intra- and interpersonal skills of self-actualization. As a member of a profession which renders assistance, she is obliged to maximise her potential in order to function optimally in a continuous intra- and interpersonal process of regeneration and growth. This research is aimed at assessing the self-actualization level of a group of nursing lecturers. A literature survey from the humanistic paradigm, was undertaken of the roles and functions of the nursing lecturer, the implications thereof for her self-actualization, the characteristics of a self actualized person, and the assessment of intra- and interpersonal characteristics of self-actualization by means of psychometric tests. The population for this research comprised 103 white female nursing lecturers. Data were obtained on the intra- and interpersonal characteristics of self-actualization of these lecturers by means of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) (for measuring intrapersonal characteristics), and the Schutz Measures (for measuring interpersonal characteristics). The outcomes were analysed by descriptive statistics. The outcomes in terms of intrapersonal characteristics of self-actualization indicate the presence of developmental areas in seven of the twelve POI items. These items are Time ratio, Support Ratio, Self-actualization value, Existentiality, Feeling Reactivity, Self-acceptance, Nature of man, and Synergy. Developmental areas with regard to interpersonal characteristics of self-actualization in nursing lecturers exist for Behaviour, Feelings, The .self, Me-to-you and You-to-me relationships. Research findings indicate the existence of various developmental areas regard to intra- and interpersonal characteristics of self-actualization of nursing lecturers. Recommendations are made on research possibilities for the future.en_US
