    Abstract
The Jainistic doctrine of categories This study attempts to trace Jainism to its roots in the original, pre-Vedic religion of the ancient Harappa civilization. Vardhamana Mahivira, universally accepted as the founder of this religion, was according to ancient Jaina scriptures, the twentyfourth tirthankara of the present avasarpini-ara (de= clining period), and he built the doctrine on ancient dogmas as well as doctrines pursued by his predecessor Parsva. Jainism is not merely a reaction against the prevalent religion of Brahmanism in the sixth century B.C. with its predominant animal sacrifices.
