    Abstract
BUSINESS PLANNING REGARDING THE MAINTENANCE OF ASSETS OF THE PRODUCE DEPARTMENT OF SENTRAALWES Compared to other agricultural co-operatives Sentraalwes pays more for the maintenance of its assets in the produce department. Historically maintenance had been undertaken on an ad hoc basis with the emphasis on the construction of new silos. In later years a computer system has been implemented to assist in the operational planning and management of maintenance. The purpose of this study is to implement business planning techniques in order to manage maintenance in such a way that it is acceptable for management both regarding cost and service. It was conducted by means of a literature study which forms the basis of the business planning process. In order to gather relevant information from other co-operatives a questionnaire was used. With chapter four as a guideline problems in the present maintenance system were identifies and evaluated. The questionnaire was implemented to compare Sentraalwes with other co-operatives. In chapter six it was pointed out that business planning is currently not used in the produce department of Sentraalwes for the management of maintenance. Variables in the business planning were discussed and related to the field of study. In chapter seven it was shown that operational objectives had been successfully derived from strategic planning. Specific quantitative goals are the result of a proper statement from management regarding the level of service required and the cost parameters. In conclusion it can be said that although it appears that maintenance is difficult to plan according to general management techniques it is possible. The deregulation of agriculture necessitate proper management of assets in order to maintain a high level of service in order to be competitive.
