Godsdiensbeoefening en vryetydbesteding van 'n groep plaasbewoners in die Noordwes Provinsie : 'n maatskaplikewerk-ondersoek
Abstract
The investigation reported in this report, forms part of a larger research
project conducted by the faculty of Health Sciences at the Potchefstroom
University for Christian Higher Education. This article forms part of a
multiprofessional project entitled the FLAGH project. FLAGH stands for Farm
Labourers and General Health. The aim was to investigate the circumstances
of farm dwellers on a specific farm in the Northwest Province. Among others,
a survey was conducted with regard to the farm dwellers' health, social
functions, alcohol consumption, family circumstances and economic welfare.
Details of the infrastructure on this farm and a general need's assessment
was done. The investigation was done on a farm at Rysmierbult in the
Potchefstroom district during December 2001. Eighty respondents were
involved in the investigation, involving adult men and women that are
members of the specific farm community.
With regard to leisure time activity of the respondents, the conclusion was
made that the passiveness of the farm dwellers and the absence of healthy
leisure time activities was a cause of concern. However, the respondents are
mainly active church-goers. The results of the research on religious
worshipping indicated that the church will have to play a bigger role in order to
provide for the religious needs of farm dwellers.
