Abstract

The aim of this thesis has been to study the matter of theatre training at university level in a critical and scientific manner and to reach some conclusion as well as to make some contribution to the stimulation and growth .of the academic theatre in this country. In order to render the study and the findings topical I decided to visit drama departments at universities in the USA and indpendent schools of drama in England and in the Netherlands. The former was deemed necessary because the Americans are regarded as pioneers and are still regarded as the leaders in the field of academic theatre. The latter was undertaken because both the local regional councils for the performing arts and the pro= fessional theatre regard English drama schools very highly.
