This study was undertaken to determine what measures could be taken to promote a healthy and safe learning environment in the design and technology workshop, through the design of a dust extraction system. The sample was taken from all design and technology classes at the International school of South Africa (ISSA) in Mafikeng. Three Form 2 classes in the school participated in the study. A total of sixty learners were involved in the study. A case study method was used in this study. Data was gathered from questionnaire, observation and interviews to establish strategies that could effectively enhance the learning environment. The study analyzed dust extractor which meant incorporating the designs, methods of extractions and cognitive preferences of the workshop environment. When creating a dust extractor for maximum flexibility, systematic attention must be given to particular design guidelines which include specifications. Results indicated that generally the dust in the workshop affected the performance of learners during learning. However, there were other machine areas in the workshop that needed proper dust removers from the point of source. These included systems of dust extraction and providing a healthy and safe environment .. This indicated that the installation of an ideal dust extraction system would promote a safe and healthy environment in the design and technology workshop, which would enhance learning.en_US
