Abstract

The aim of this qualitative exploratory study was to investigate and describe the views of cancer patients regarding psycho-educational interventions during their cancer treatment. The conceptual framework that supports this study was guided by a constructivist-interpretivist perspective, and the study is approached through the lens of the hope theory. A purposeful sampling strategy was used to select participants who had all previously been diagnosed with cancer but were, at the time of the research, in full remission. The participants’ interests were taken into account by voluntary participation and obtaining informed consent before the data collection process began. The data collection process consisted of focus groups, and data saturation occurred after two focus group interviews were held. The nine participants in the focus groups shared their experience with cancer and identified shortcomings related to psycho-educational interventions. The findings suggest that psycho-educational interventions may be significant in psycho-oncological support. Most of the participants indicated that this type of support falls short and that the training and education of cancer-related aspects, especially the psychological aspects thereof, are of importance.
