dc.description.abstractScientific research aims mainly at uncovering the true essentials of research objects, while simultaneously seeking findings and results that are true to reality. This study addresses the questionable attitude of school pupils towards Afrikaans as a school subject. It is an attempt to identify the factors that contribute towards, or have an effect. Recommendations resulting from the research results should be directly related to the effective teaching of Afrikaans. Bearing these purposes in mind, a questionnaire, addressing various aspects of the attitude of pupils towards Afrikaans as school subject, was compiled and categorized into ten sub-scales. The Std. 9 pupils in twenty-seven Afrikaans schools (including two double medium schools) in Pretoria were used as population. Five of these schools formed a random sample. According to the reactions of the respondents it became clear that pupils don't have a negative attitude towards Afrikaans as school subject, but that they experience the tuition they receive in a negative way. This negative experience leads directly to low motivation, under-achievement, clumpsy language usage and poverty of expression. The purpose and recommended teaching strategies are mainly aimed at the improvement of teaching practice and are all related to effective teaching, based on planning and motivation.
