The impact of training and development on employee performance within the workplace (North-West Province)
Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of the study is to investigate the impact of training and development on employee
perfonnance in the workplace. The researcher attempted to find awareness of the level of existing discrepancies on of employee's perfonnance within the public sector that hindered service delivery and lead to dissatisfaction among the same employees and the public they are supposed to service. From that stance, the research survey investigates the problem which has led to a lack of appropriate training and development for employees. Research Approach - The study was undertaken at the Department of Public Works and Roads in the Northwest Province of South Africa. The researcher adopted both qualitative and quantitative method
approach. The problem identified generates a myriad of challenges in the workplace, negatively affecting performance and the organisation's reputation. Subsequent to these challenges, the research objectives focus on establishing whether or not the acquired skills are applied in the workplace by employees through their knowledge and ability for training and development and identify weaknesses emanating from performance deficiencies The link between the Industrial Relations Philosophy, Training and Development, and Employee
Performance is considered for the study. Findings - Various research techniques including literature review, methodology and design are important factors in designing how the reliability and validity of the study were measured. In this context, 110 questionnaires were completed, returned, analysed and interpreted. The correlation coefficient between dependent and independent variables was evaluated through Pearson t-test and the results showed that the relationship does exist. The study revealed a negatively skewed outcome, the research provides insider impression of the study and recommends concerted planning and cautioning of training and development to enhance employee performance for the institution understudied. Future Research - The most vital asset of every organisation under stiff and dynamic competition is its human capital, therefore the survey on the impact of training and development on employee performance for Department of Public Works, and Roads is recommended for future research.
