Tshekatsheko ya Omphile Umpi Modise ya ga D.P.S. Monyaise go ya ka Bolepakanelo jwa ga Gerard Genette
Abstract
Since Setswana followed the Western approach to literary criticism, several researchers have taken part in Setswana literature criticism. One of them is RM. Malope in 'Tshekatsheko tsenelelo ya dipadi tse tlhano tsa ntlha tsa ga D.P.S. Monyaise', he stated the following features of a novel as the theme, narration, characters and
language and style. Definitions of features and supporting example are given in order to clarify them for the readers. The objective of Malope's thesis is to inform the readers of the text, which serve as indispensable basic way of literature analysis of the text according to the Western approach of literary criticism. This broadens the criticism of novel, Malope's school of thought was beefed up by M. Lesete, in 'Nte, ke go tseye kgopu', analysing Matlhoko Matlhoko and Samorerwana, B.N. Kgosikoma used Omphile Umphi Madise in their critical analysis. The reader and students have an elementary comprehension of the main features of the novel. However, the above comprehension proof to be superficial. This became evident when statistics in grade 12 literature papers were taken which shows that leaners were unable to adequately extract these features in the piece of work in prose. Malope stated that the different features of a novel inextricable intertwine to an extent that they could not be reasonably separated without posing a danger to the structure of a novel. This uncertainty contribution towards the understanding of this research, to fill the existing gap. This research attempts to use Gerard Genette's Narratology to solve the above mentioned problem in Setswana novel. As Bal (i.e Genette's student) was used both on drama genre and use the medium of research as English. With Genette's Narratology the main focus will be to look at the ways in which an author represent the events of a text through narration and the way that he uses the character to represent the theme in order to make the understanding of the text holistic. Genette's Narratology will be viewed under 3 divisons: Story, Text and Narration. Genette's Narratology typology will form the basis of this research to help present the features of the novel in an understandable way.
In order to achieve all the above stated , this research will be divided into 4 chapters. Chapter 1 will present the background about a novel genre, problem statement, the aim, the research method and the solution of the problem. This is to make sure that the reader should have the information about a novel in Setswana so as to flow with the content of the research . Chapter 2 will cover the background information about Narratology, Genette's Narratology and his biography. This is to help the reader understand what is realy meant by Narratology and Genette's interpretation, so as to be in line with the application of Genette's work in chapter 3. Chapter 3 will apply Genette's Narratological analysis on the chosen text, namely Omphile Umphi Madise. This is where the text narrative and narration will be closely monitored to see if Omphile Umphi Madise has made Genette's Narratological theory. D.P.S. Monyaise will not be overlooked as it may share light on the setting in Omphile Umphi Madise. The research will end with chapter 4, being the summary of the highlight of the facts as espoused in chapter 1 to 3 of this research.
