This study analyses the protection of selected civil and political rights under the Zimbabwe Constitution 2013. For the purpose of this research the following civil and political rights are discussed: the right to life, the right to human dignity, right to freedom from torture, right to freedom of assembly and association, the right to freedom to demonstrate and petition, the right to freedom of expression and the right to free and fair elections. This analysis is informed by the fact that despite the protection of civil and political rights under the Zimbabwe Constitution 2013 there are a number of challenges with regard to their enforcement. These rights are violated through the use of specific legislative provisions such as Public Order and Security Act, Access to Information and Privacy Act and Private Voluntary Organisations Act, the use of law enforcement officers and through political interference by the government in different human rights institutions. The aim of this research is to analyse whether the Zimbabwe Constitution 2013 has consistently provided for the protection of selected civil and political rights in line with regional and international standards. This research is to show what measures need to be taken for the adequate protection and enforcement of civil and political rights in Zimbabwe.en_US
