Abstract

This study focused on the pastoral care of the person in a No-Way Out (Forced) Divorce. In chapter 2, a definition is formulated of the phenomenon of a No-Way out Divorce. Principles from Scripture concerning a No-Way Out Divorce are derived from Matthew 19: 1 - 12 and 1 Corinthians 7: 1 - 16. The factors that contribute to the occurrence of a No-Way out Divorce are considered through a study of relevant literature. Applicable pastoral principles were highlighted by considering the most important protagonists in the science of Pastoral Care. Chapter 3 considered the pastoral needs of a person that lives through a No-Way out Divorce. This was done by a qualitative empirical study of five study cases. A study of the literature from the congenial sciences of Psychology and Sociology was done to add to the empirical study of five study cases. In chapter 4 a narrative approach to the pastoral care of a person that lives through a No-Way out Divorce, was proposed. Guidelines were given concerning the coping with the trauma caused by a No-Way out Divorce and for the ministering of hope in the life of a person experiencing a No-Way out Divorce. In chapter 5, a conclusion is drawn from the study. It is concluded that a No-Way out Divorce poses unique challenges to the pastor and that a narrative approach provides enough pastoral tools to give meaningful guidance on a pastoral level to a person living through a No-Way out Divorce.
