The aim of the study was to determine what the relationship is between the task of preserving and the task of extending the church according to the Newe Testament. To reach this aim, answers were saught to the -Following questions: 2.1. What can be determined about the relationship between the building up of the church and evangelisation when the semantic domains of relevant words and lexical units are compared? 2.2. How does the task of preserving the church influence the task of extending the church? 2.3. Vice versa: How does the command to extend the church influence the task of preserving the church? 2.4. To what extent are these two functions of the church interwoven with each other? 3.5. What are the implications of this relationship for the different aspects and structures of the practical day-to-day life of the church according to the New Testament? 3. METHOD The study is primarily an exegetical investigation into the meaning of some relevant words in the New Testament. It consists of three main parts: 3.1. A part that investigates in context, words from the the New Testament that are of primary importance -for the basis of the upbuilding of the church and evangelisation. Implications for the relation between the preservation and the extension of the church are then determined from the meanings, as well as the context in which the words are examined. This part is devoted to the investigation into the meaning of the following words: (Look page 262) 3.2. A part that investigates in context, words from the the New Testament that are of secondary importance for the basis of the upbuilding of the church and evangelisation. Implications for the relation between the preservation and the extension of the church are then determined from the meanings, as well as the context in which the words are examined. This part is devoted to the investigation into the meaning of the following words: (Look page 263) 3.3. A part that, in view of the basic principles deducted in the firs two parts, gives perspectives New Testament context and by sketching a profile of the church building up itself in numbers as well as in spiritual quality. 3.4. A last part where the final conclusions are drawn. 4. CONCLUSIONS 4.1. The meaning of the relevant words in the New Testament. 4.1.1. Throughout the New Testament the word ....... comprises both the preservation and the extension of the church. 4.1.2. The word ....... means the proclaiming of glad tidings. It can be directed at unbelievers with a view to call them to conversion, or at believers to strengthen their faith. Therefore ........ is an aspect of qualitative and quantitative ..... 4.1.3. The words ......, which have the word growth as translation equivalent, also embrace the preservation and the extension of the church. 4.1.4. The primary aspect of qualitative growth in the life of believers implies self-denial because they must become more and more Christcentered. This is a necessary condition for quantitive growth in the church. 4.1.5. The words ..... denote outsiders who have to be won for Christ through witnessing by word and deed. 4.1.6. Most of the words used in conjunction with the teaching and equiping of believers, such as ..... als o have a missionary dimension. On the one hand it means the teaching of people in order to bring them to faith and repentance and admission to the church. On the other hand it means to bring believers to growing and total obedience to God - which also includes involvement in the missionary work of the church. 4.1.7. The word .... indicates the winning of people who are alienated from God, and this is also an objective in pastoral counselling. 4.1.8. In their testimonies believers do not merely give objective facts about the gospel, but must also show that God's saving grace is a reality in their own lives. 4.1.9. The church as a whole must give testimony of Jesus Christ with their practising of mutual love and fellowship. 4.1.10. Because the word .... not only indicates the proclamation of Jesus as Lord of the entire creation, in all circumstances of people's lives, but also entails a call to repentance and faith to unbelievers, it denotes missionary preaching as well as the calling of all believers to a life of continuous repentance and sanctification. 4.1.11. The word .... denotes the increasing of numbers in the church, but it is so closely linked with aspects of the preservation of the church that it is quite clear that growth will not take place if mutual love and persistent prayer in the congregation does not take high priority. Implications for the relation between preservation and the extension of the church. 4.2.1. Qualitative as well as quantitative building up of the church has a theosentric aim. Accordingly the church does not exist for the world nor does the world set its agenda. The church exists for God. When the church is truly God centered it reveals the glory of God in the growth in sanctification of the members as well as the in the adding of new believers to its ranks. When the church is preoccupied with its Lord and his authority over all things it is kept from horisontalism in missions as well as from a sickly selfcentered pietism. 4.2.2. In the practical building up of the church the preservation and the extension of the church can never be seperated. 4.2.3. Spiritual growth and growth in numbers are very closely linked; believers should win outsiders for Christ and his church by witnessing in words and by their holy conduct in life. Their adoration of their Lord in public worship, their teaching and pastoral work and their fellowship should equip them for their task as co-workers in both the quantitive and qualitive growth of the church. Churches with no vision for missions, deprive their members of a very important motive for holy conduct in life. THE CHURCH MUST PRESERVE TO BE ABLE TO EXTEND AND MUST EXTEND TO BE PRESERVED.
