Abstract

Potchefstroom with a mixed population of 13,117 souls, situate 88 miles from Johannesburg on the main line to Capetown: and 4,436 feet above sealevel is recognised as one of the most beautiful towns of the Transvaal, and is, rapidly becoming perhaps the most popular place of resort in that Province. The town is laid out on the Boer principle over an open, undulating stretch of grass-clad country: giant willows and furrows of clear, sparkling water lining the streets throughout the whole of their length. lt has been rightly named the "garden town" - it is one; not on the lines of those towns built on an orthodox plan by a syndicate anxious for the better housing of the people but, none the less, a garden town of a real type for every home has its orchard and flower garden which in summer is a mass of bloom: then the hedges are laden, with roses with here and there beautiful and delicate runners and other climbing floral beauties peeping out from the foliage of cypress and quince.
