The purpose of the study is to have a clear understanding of the current skills of entrepreneurs in the informal sector of the Goldfields. By means of investigation, appropriate advice and recommendations can be made to e.g. local government and SEDA in the Goldfields regarding future training and learnerships for this sector. The researcher is also interested in developing a skills programme, in conjunction with SEDA, for informal entrepreneurs to help them be more successful in their businesses. Another purpose of this study is to make the public aware of the lack of skills in the entrepreneurial, informal sector of South Africa. Training is of immense importance, as most of these entrepreneurs are sole providers and use their small incomes to provide for big families. Acknowledgement of the lack of skill will be the first step in creating a better future for many South Africans. The empirical research conducted in the Goldfields was done in order to assess the informal entrepreneurial picture in the Goldfields and to establish whether development of entrepreneurs in the informal sector exist or is taken place in the local district municipalities where local entrepreneurs operate their business activities.Thesis
