The induction of the newly appointed principal of the secondary school is examined in this thesis. From the literature it was determined what induction entails, what the nature and scope of the induction process is and how the process can be planned, organized and controlled. It was also determined how the newly appointed principal should relate to various aspects and how he should handle conceptions such as change and organizational climate. The many problems experienced by the newly appointed principal and the characteristics of the ideal principal that can serve as example for the newly appointed principal were clearly noticeable from the literature. By means of an empirical investigation it was determined what problems a newly appointed principal faces in his effective induction. Furthermore the correlation between biographical and demographical data of the newly appointed principal and the problems he experienced was determined. A few hints for the smooth induction of the newly appointed principal came to light through the empirical investigation. In conclusion guidelines were given for the successful induction of the newly appointed principal. Special attention was given to the role of superintendents, mentors, consultants and what the newly appointed principal himself should do towards the success of his own induction.en_US
