This research centres mainly around the following questions: • What is the nature of stress? • Which factors cause stress in principals? • What can be done to identify and handle stress? In the literature study attention was paid to the nature and manifestations of stress. Different perspectives and misconceptions regarding stress were discussed. The development of various stress models was discussed and included in one management stress model. A complete exposition of the management cycle was given. The potential effect of stress on the principal is indicated and a selection of techniques to deal with it is discussed. Different stressors were identified from the literature study and classified into four areas of stress, namely the principal's personality, management style, managerial tasks and the school community. An empirical research was conducted by means of a structured post questionnaire to determine which factors are the most important sources of stress in principals. Finally a summary of the literature study and empirical research was made. Findings were based on the presence of important stressors and principals' handling of stress. Suggestions are made with regard to future research.en_US
