Exploring the causes of delivery delays in a supply management company in Gauteng

Abstract

In the dynamic landscape of supply chain management, the ability to deliver products on time is crucial for the success and sustainability of any organisation. This study, employing a case study design, explored the intricate web of factors contributing to delivery delays within Nucleus Supply Management, a prominent supply management company based in South Africa, during a disruptive period. The investigation aimed to identify and analyse the multifaceted causes behind the observed delays, shedding light on the challenges faced by both the organisation in maintaining a seamless supply chain and customers. The study employed a comprehensive research methodology, namely a qualitative approach to gather data from employees and customers of Nucleus Supply Chain Management. Through interviews with customers and employees, analysis of internal records, and examination of industry trends, the research sought to uncover the root causes of delivery delays during a period characterised by disruptions, such as economic fluctuations, natural disasters, international conflicts, and local challenges. The findings reveal a myriad of factors contributing to delivery delays of different goods and products in the supply and chain management sector, ranging from international conflicts, natural disasters, and local economic and infrastructure challenges. Furthermore, the case study examines the strategies employed by Nucleus Supply Management to mitigate the impact of these challenges. Through a comparative analysis of successful and unsuccessful interventions, the research identified best practices and lessons learned, providing valuable insights for other supply chain entities grappling with similar disruptions. The implications of this study extend beyond Nucleus Supply Management, serving as a relevant reference for supply chain professionals, academics, and policymakers grappling with the complexities of managing deliveries in disruptive periods. By understanding the intricate interplay of factors affecting delivery timelines, organisations can develop proactive strategies to enhance their resilience and responsiveness in the face of unforeseen challenges. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge in supply chain management, offering practical insights for navigating the complexities of a dynamic and uncertain business environment.
