    Abstract
    As a new country on the international scene Botswana has found itself in very difficult circumstances since 1966 (the year of independence). Against the background of a conflict - riddled sub-continent and exposed to diverse influences like those of the West , the communist states , the Frontline states and South Africa; Botswana was forced to carve a way for itself in international politics with an extremely limited power base. Its exceptional success as a developing Third World country is apparently vested in the fact that it has succeeded in upholding its unique identity in Southern Africa and in making its own contribution to regional politics....
