The study investigated the socio-economic and environmental impact of tourism on local communities in the North West Province with special reference to Ledig village, Rustenburg. An explorative research design was adopted to gain insight into the problem, given that there was insufficient knowledge about the problem. Both secondary data from literature and primary data from the survey were gathered. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyse the data collected. The study revealed that there was a positive cultural and economic impact of tourism and the contrary negative environmental and social impact of tourism on the study community. The government intervention was perceived to be playing a significant role in the promotion of tourism. The study revealed limited traditional leadership and community participation in tourism development. An overwhelming majority of respondents considered indigenous knowledge to be important in promoting tourism development. Participation in tourism activities by all stakeholders ranging from the government, nongovernmental organisations, traditional leadership, business, the study community, and other interest groups including youth and women will be desirable. This will contribute to the development of entrepreneurial activities through active participation in tourism activities and infusion of influence of indigenous knowledge system. Integration of indigenous knowledge system in relation to tourism development is crucial in ensuring sustainable livelihood of the local communities.en_US
