An evaluation of the status of the empowerment of women in the department of Public works, roads and transport (North West province)
Abstract
The research aimed at evaluating the status of the empowerment of women in the
Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport in the North West Province.
Promoting gender equality and empowerment of women at local, provincial and
national level has been hampered by various constraints. The under representation
and non-development of women is a fact of life. The quantitative method was used
with a sample of female managers of the Department between level 9 and 14. The
literature review provided views on gender equality, and programmes and policies
that promote empowerment in the workplace.
Furthermore, this study provided evidence that there is a lack of the empowerment of
women in the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, North West
Province. The majority of respondents strongly agreed and disagreed to most
questionnaire questions, which should be a concern to the Department. The
management guidelines and recommendations provided by this study could be of
value to the department in order to give female employees enough opportunities and
support to develop.
