Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the extent of challenges and problems associated
with the performance appraisal system at North-West University (Mafikeng Campus.
This study gathered data from both the academic and support staff in the Mafikeng
Campus.
A quantitative research design was used in this study, which involved the use of
numerical measurements and statistical analyses of measurements to examine social
phenomena. The study was descriptive in nature and the relationships between
variables were expressed using relative frequencies.
The population in this study was confined and percentages of this study was confined
to various faculties and departments at North-West University (Mafikeng Campus).
A sample of 130 was selected using the stratified sampling technique.
The 130 copies of the questionnaire, to all 130 employees, but only 105 copies of the
questionnaire were returned.
The data was analysed usmg a computer aided programme known as Statistical
Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).
The empirical investigation revealed that there were quarterly reviews at this
institution. Respondents did not get any form of feedback on their performance to be
able to make prompt corrective measures. There was no form of communication
between the employees and their managers or supervisors concerning the employees'
performance.
The recommendations made indicated that managers or supervisor should ensure that
there are continuous assessments conducted, and that they should provide regular
feedback to ensure that corrective measures are carried out should the results indicate
that there are performance gaps.
