    Abstract
Stress elicits certain reactions in the employee. Stress creates a demand on the body and the mind. The reaction of the employee depends on whether the interaction has a positive effect or a negative effect on the employee. A positive effect in the form of a happy feeling will most likely have a positive effect at the work place. However, a negative effect will also have a negative impact on his/her work In the study, the researcher looked at the negative reactions found in a group of employees and the extent to which these signs and symptoms were present in the study sample. The study was also to find out if there were correlations between variables such as job satisfaction, satisfaction with life and distress. The data obtained was categorized into different aspects related to the research questions, sub-problems in order to meet the aims and objectives of the research. Descriptive statistics, namely frequencies and percentages for categorical data, was used to interpret the information obtained. The responses of each participant were then categorized into low, moderate and high perception of stress. This was done for both the Perceived Stress Scale and the Zung Scale. Correlations between all variables were then calculated. The influence of stress on job satisfaction was done by linear regression analysis, using each perception of stress scale and the job satisfaction scale. Most of the perceived stress common symptoms found in the present study were related to loss of self esteem and decreased optimism. Majority of the participants in the study had a high degree of stress. The study showed that perception of stress also correlated with level of job satisfaction. A high perception of stress correlated with low job satisfaction and a low perception of stress correlated with high job satisfaction.
