    Abstract
Water is the basis for life on earth, which would explain why this resource is under immense pressure. It is indispensable for life, a major basic need and also important for economic activities. Information on the challenges of water supply and its socioeconomic impact serves as guiding tool in addressing the difficulties encountered. Water shortage is a global problem and South Africa is not an exception in this regard . Similar to most semi-arid countries in Africa, Rustenburg Local Municipality has experienced a significant increase in its population that is placing ever-greater demands on the country's scarce water resources. The national government is under constitutional obligation in terms of section 27 of Act 108 of 1996, of the Republican Constitution to supply this basic social and economic service. This study investigated the challenges of water supply and its socio-economic impact in the Rustenburg Local Municipality.
