An evaluation of performance management systems in the directorate of finance, Department of Health - Mmabatho Provincial Office, North West Province
Abstract
The study evaluated the performance management system of the Directorate of Finance in
the Department of health, Mmabatho Provincial Office: North West Province.
Management in institutions have the right to ensure that objectives, goals and standards in
that particular institution are achieved. By this action management ensures that there is a
proper implementation of the performance management system, if not effectively
implemented i.e poorly planned , poorly evaluated and maintained , leads to failure in
achieving objectives, goals and standard , and performance suffers as a result. The
performance management system is ineffective due to improper implementation and
application. The study explains the methodology employed and how the research was
conducted.
This explains in broad terms the methodology and research methods used to conduct the
research and finally the steps taken to ensure that the results were valid. With regards to
the findings it became evident that there is a better understanding of the concept
performance management system by management, little or lack of understanding of the
concept performance management system by employees, a satisfactory level of the
performance management processes within the organization.
Recommendations are such that , the management needs to initiate training regarding
performance management system , bridging of the gap between managers and employees
so that employees can view management in a different perspective and that management
ensures that employees dispel their negative perception and attitudes towards performance
management system. The Directorate of Finance in the Department of Health is situated in
Mmabatho, North West Province and has three Directorates namely, Budgeting and
Planning, Financial Management and Internal Control, Assets and Risk Management. A
sample of 60 staff members of the Directorate of Finance was used.
