The Millennium development goals (MDGs) and challenges of development in Africa : a case study of Botswana vision 2016
Abstract
This dissertation examines the millennium development goals (MDGs) and challenges of development in Africa using Botswana as a case study. Against the fact that African continent remains largely undeveloped with many Africans suffering from disease, extreme poverty and unemployment amongst others despite various development programmes, strategies and initiatives, the study seeks examine and investigate the challenges of development in Botswana in spite of the implementation of the MDGs and vision 2016 among others. The study employed the descriptive method using qualitative research methodology in testing its major hypothesis and analysing the data collected. The analysis showed that Botswana's long term Vision 2016 represents a national policy agenda that set out the aims and objectives of the government and the strategies for achieving them towards enhanced growth and development. However, there is need for strong collaboration between Botswana's Government and the civil society with the mandate that will guarantee actual accomplishment of stated objectives. This thesis established that such collaboration is far from being realised. It is therefore concluded that to ensure required success, there must be effective collaboration and cooperation in terms of the performance of specific roles among these major stakeholders.
