Avontuur: 'n Praktykgebaseerde verkenning van intermedialiteit en materialiteit in 'n boekprojek
Abstract
There is an increasing awareness of the importance and place of distinctive research needs and methods in creative fields such as creative writing. This article uses the practice-based research approach to discuss a book project in which different artists cooperated. In this hybrid book, Avontuur, a variety of genres and media (word text, cartoons, photographs, documents, physical objects) are combined and the readers are invited to construe their own version of the story. The concepts of intermediality and materiality are used as approaches to make it possible to describe the project and the text and to explain the interaction between media. Attention is given to the representation, the relationship between the different media / parts of the book, the book as a concrete object and the result of the intermedial reading experience. It is concluded that artists' books, such as these, may be of value to investigate the creative process as well as intermedial relationships. In the book project, knowledge and insight were gained through the process, through the artwork itself, and also through the critical and analytical reflection on it.
