    Abstract
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the introduction of the notion of the employee shareholder in the United Kingdom in the context of the labour and corporate law framework in South Africa. It provides the backdrop regarding the question whether such a provision would be a viable option taking into account issues such as the promotion of social justice in corporations and workplaces, the protective view of labour law, economic and industrial democracy as well as the empowerment of employees by means of financial participation.
